Book Review and Giveaway
Hear No Evil is by far the best book I’ve read recently in the non-fiction Christian genre. Matthew Paul Turner shares his journey from a Christian fundamentalist upbringing, which even swore off christian music as being “the devil’s excrement”, to his career in the music business with transparency, authenticity and humor. I found myself laughing out loud as I related to Turner’s hilarious analogies and metaphors used to describe legalistic, religious, and narrow-minded values. Because I knew that my husband could also relate to the stories, I read a good portion of the book aloud to him.
When I accepted the offer from WaterBrook Multnomah to review this book, I expected to like it because I enjoy reading Matthew Paul Turner’s (a.k.a. @JesusNeedsNewPR) updates on Twitter. However, I was surprised to find, as I read through the pages of his book, that this author felt like an old friend. I’m not sure if it’s because Matthew Paul Turner’s writing-style is so endearing, or if it’s due to the fact that I, too, live in the Nashville area and frequent Fido’s. Whatever the case, I am thankful for the opportunity to take this ride along memory lane with Turner. It definitely left me with food for thought about my own attitudes and convictions.

Book Summary
A collection of wise, compelling, and often uproariously funny essays built around the experience of music as a transformational element in a moment of truth, Hear No Evil mines Matthew Paul Turner’s humorous memories of his evangelical youth and invites readers to groove along on his journey.
From attending forbidden contemporary Christian concerts to moving to “Music City” Nashville, Hear No Evil chronicles Turner’s “life soundtrack” which morphs seamlessly into the stories of people, places, and experiences that have taught the music-editor-turned-author some new things about God, forced him out of his comfort zone, and introduced him to a fresh view of grace along the way.
If you’ve ever had the opening bars of a song transport you back in time or remind you of a pivotal spiritual moment, Matthew Paul Turner’s honest—and frequently hilarious—musings will strike a chord. Straight forward and amusing, Hear No Evil is an exploration of a life of faith lived to a personal soundtrack.

The Christian music industry when I was growing up was Amy Grant, Carmen, Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, DC Talk, & Sandi Patty. They were ROCK STARS to me, since I was a PK and they were the only music I was allowed to listen to. But I loved them – still do.
Love ya!

I saw Stephen Curtis Chapman in concert. I thought I was so cool sitting 3rd row center!
I had never heard of CCM until I was invited to a Petra concert by my Campus Life leader. Suddenly a whole new world was opened to me. (quite literally as i ended up giving my life to Christ at that concert.) I went on to become a DJ and music programmer at a new Christian radio station and began to listen exclusively to the likes of Charlie Peacock, Rich Mullins, Margaret Becker, and Steven Curtis Chapman. I’m a little more diverse in my music selections now but will be forever grateful to a Christian rock band who gave me my start on this road they call the Christian journey.
Just tweeted about the giveaway!
I remember my first Christian concert was Carmen…a free one at that!
Following you on Twitter now.
i remember listening to the newsboys "hell is for wimps" & etw tapes as a pre-teen. it's what turned me off to Christian music. it wasn't until about 10 years later when i heard plankeye, strongarm, and poor old lu that i knew that Christian music could be more than second-rate ripoff's.
i'm following @JesusNeedsNewPR now.
I was absolutely OBSESSED with Amy Grant! If I had been old enough to go see that concert, I totally would have been there too. I also had the rap in the middle of DC Talk's "Jesus Freak" memorized.
